Web Design for Businesses, Hobbies and Other Obsessions
Welcome to Technical Web Services. If you've arrived here from Crappy Old Books, you've probably already discovered that not everything on the internet has to involve enormous corporations, subscription fees and people trying to sell you things you don't want.
Crappy Old Books is one of my own websites. It sells thousands of second-hand books covering everything from poetry and science fiction to transport, architecture, history and subjects so obscure that even the authors might have forgotten about them.
But somebody has to build websites like that. And that's where Technical Web Services comes in.
Have You Got Something You'd Like to Put on the Internet?
Perhaps you run a small business. Perhaps you collect something unusual, restore old motorcycles, publish books, organise events or have spent the last twenty years researching a subject that nobody else seems particularly interested in.
Maybe you've got a shop, a club, a specialist service or an idea for a website that you've never quite got around to doing anything about.
Whatever it is, there's a reasonable chance I can help you put it online.
Websites That Actually Do Something
Technical Web Services isn't just about producing attractive pages with a few photographs and a contact form.
I build websites for businesses and individuals who need something practical, whether that's a straightforward company website, an online catalogue, an e-commerce shop or a more complicated system built around their particular requirements.
Services include:
- Business websites – from simple introductory pages to larger company websites.
- Online shops – sell products, manage stock and take orders directly through your own website.
- Specialist catalogues – ideal for collectors, booksellers, dealers and businesses with unusual products.
- Custom database websites – websites that organise, display and manage substantial amounts of information.
- Website redesigns – improve an existing website without necessarily starting again.
- Search engine optimisation – help search engines understand your website and what you offer.
- Hosting and ongoing support – somewhere for your website to live and someone to help when it misbehaves.
Not Every Website Needs to Be an Empire
There's nothing wrong with starting small.
You might only need a single page explaining what you do, where you are and how people can contact you. Or you might want a substantial website with hundreds or thousands of pages.
Some projects are straightforward. Others require a little invention, especially when you're trying to do something that doesn't fit neatly into an off-the-shelf template.
I'm happy to discuss both.
Crappy Old Books Is a Working Example
If you've been browsing Crappy Old Books, you've already been using one of my own projects.
It's a working online second-hand bookshop with thousands of individually listed books, searchable stock, categories, photographs and an ordering system.
It also demonstrates something important: a website doesn't have to look or behave like every other website to serve its purpose.
Not everybody wants a fashionable corporate design. Some people just want a website that reflects their business, their interests and the way they actually work.
Independent Web Design Without the Corporate Performance
Technical Web Services is an independent web design business, not a large agency with account managers, sales departments and endless meetings about brand positioning.
If you get in touch, you'll be speaking to the person who actually builds the websites.
You don't need to know anything about HTML, PHP, databases, web hosting or search engines. Equally, if you're technically minded and want to discuss those things in considerable detail, that's fine too.
And if you've got an unusual idea that doesn't seem to fit into any standard web design package, I'd be interested to hear about it.
Got an Idea? Get in Touch.
Whether you're running a business, developing a specialist project or just considering putting something online, feel free to get in touch for an informal discussion.
There's no obligation to commission anything, and you don't need to arrive with a fifty-page specification.
Call Technical Web Services on 07745 466608.
Or use the contact options on this website to tell me a little about what you're planning.
And if you only came here because you were looking for an obscure book about steam engines, medieval architecture or the history of the British motor industry, thanks for visiting anyway.
