Blog - ChatGPT - The New Wonder

Technical Web Services has just started using ChatGPT, here are our first impressions.

In short, amazing.

Within an hour we signed up for the paid version. The free version seemed to work well, but at $20/m it seemed like a definite way to welcome the new technology on board. I literally can't remember feeling that generous about a product.

So what is it?

Well, it creates content, words, blubs, reports and almost anything.

There are some limitations, for example, I doubt it could currently write this.

Suffice to say, ChatGPT is a tool and it will have uses.

Already I have created nearly 300 pages of content for a clients site where that content was lacking and had been for years, mainly because it was literally to demanding to create. Instead there were generic paragraphs with certain terms changed. Whilst it took me 2 days to do, it was an incredible relief to get something so suitable in place. As a tool, it is a circular saw where before I only had a pair of scissors.

ChatGPTalso creates the sort of marketing spiel I could not write.

For example, on a side project in which I sell books, I asked for a blurb for a book about the ocean floors. It starts off:

If you're looking for a book that will take you on a thrilling adventure to the ocean's depths, then Life in the Open Sea is the perfect choice for you.

Let’s face it, I would not have thought to write like that. Similarly, it ends:

So if you're ready for an adventure unlike any other, pick up a copy of Life in the Open Sea today. You won't be disappointed!

The very idea of an adventure like no other somehow turns it into something magical. Its just a grubby book written in 1974 with a few poorly drawn illustrations.

However, you have to be careful. On another side project I was experimenting on regarding a find of Roman coins off the A140, or some such place, the blurb I asked for continued on with:

Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a unique and educational experience, the A120 Little Hadham Bypass is the perfect destination for you. Come and discover the rich history of the ancient Romans and the fascinating discoveries that have been made in the area.

And then went on to say:

Contact us today to schedule a tour of this historic site and experience the wonder of Roman history on the A120 Little Hadham Bypass.

Well, suffice to say, this is a bit too keen for me. Whilst I am happy to sell a book on the grounds that it will provide an adventure like no other, I am not prepared to offer guided tours off of a field by the A120 Little Hadham Bypass.

So as a tool, it has its uses.

To be honest, I am still digesting the possibilities.

My initial predictions are that it will result in a huge increase in spammy content. Whilst some content is acceptable, for example, a joiner with 20 near identical pages on working with various woods, oak, teak, pine, etc, what it very easily allows is a page on anything very quickly. For example, 'write me a web page with mark up on custom table joinery in oak', and then 'a web page on exterior folding custom tables in mahogany', etc, etc, in an endless sprawl of spammy content. This has already happened, but that content had to be created, generally written by hand and taking 20-50 minutes, and not something TWS would have done, but now a good and relatively convincing page can be created in 2 minutes. You don't really even need to read it, ChatGPT is that good.

Other things I have tried, creating poems in the style of Edward Lear based on this content........ Hilarious. You could almost write a complete book of poems in an afternoon. And I believe people will start to do that. Places like Amazon will be swamped with ChatGPT books. Laugh? I nearly bought a self-help book to increase my time efficiency. Point is, spammy books are already there, but they took a lot longer than an afternoon to write.

Replying to emails? Easy, just ask ChatGPT  to reply to EMAIL CONTENT saying thank you, I am interested but very busy, make the reply long winded and include a joke about the weather.

Sitting there thinking, the no brainer for the politically active would be to take any news story and ask ChatGPT  to create a similar story but blame everything on Trump, Putin or Brexit.

Another site I have on plants will benefit. Just ask ChatGPT  for a blog post on the plum tree fourth year, loads of fruit, lots of snails, great growth and lots of jam, make it long with two jokes and reference to lots of good weather with a bit of rain. Bingo, 500-1000 words that no one will ever read. Job done, less than 3 minutes.

If you are a customer and you have got this far, the benefit to you is that if you have a need that is suitable for ChatGPT , then TWS can help make that happen. For example, a range of t-shirts in 50 colours. Maybe you dont want to sit there for 2-3 hours copy/pasting, but TWS can, and the result is that you have 50 pages of unique content that will refer to yellow like the sun, Daytona yellow like the desert, etc etc in a way that makes it easy to do and actually makes sense. For example, 'write a blurb for a yellow cotton t-shirt, make reference to several examples of yellow in nature and everyday life'. Do that 50 times just changing the colour.

To demonstrate further, I will ask to ChatGPT  to 'write me a blog post for my company Technical Web Services, on the benefits of ChatGPT for creating web sites, referencing the ease of creating large volumes of similar pages, but highlight the risk of saying things that are unbelievable. Also add a joke reference to the ability to write nonsense poems in the style of Edward Lear'. I will post that below and let’s see which was the best, you judge, TWS or ChatGPT.
